Bubbl.us is a Web 2.0 concept mapping and brainstorming application.  Users place and connect text bubbles using an online interface.  Concept maps can be exported in JPEG or PNG graphical formats or embedded into a website.  They can also be emailed to another individual.  With a Bubbl.us user account, concept maps may be shared for collaborative work.

Strengths:

  • Concept maps exported as graphics files look very professional
  • Users have the ability to work collaboratively
  • Bubbl.us application is in active development with an open beta release of the version 2.0 software

Weaknesses:

  • The application is a bit challenging to use at first  (The version 2.0 beta is a little easier to use.)
  • There are no options for controlling the shape of bubbles or connectors so complex concept maps are difficult to construct
  • No options to control size of exported concept maps.

Bubbl.us would be of use in any middle level or higher classroom.  The somewhat steep learning curve may limit its usefulness to lower level classrooms.  Bubbl.us is quite useful for making quick concept maps or conducting brainstorming sessions.  It would also be convenient to use with a SMARTBoard.

Bubbl.us is free and a user account is not needed to use the service.  A free user account is needed to access collaboration functionality.  An internet-connected computer with Adobe’s Flash player is required for access.
