The first week of school is not even over with and I am dealing with the gum issue. I love chewing gum just like the next person. I also know there are benefits of chewing gum. I understand that chewing gum can benefit concentrations and test scores. But, I am at the point the negatives outweigh the positives right now. I am finding gum stuck to desks, lockers, tables, and other assortment of places. I have wrappers littering the floors of the hallways and classrooms. I have students interrupting classrooms to see if they can blow their gum bigger than their friend or who can pop it the loudest.
I wonder what other educators and schools think of this? But, for now, I have to ban gum.

Understanding the benefits, I still prefer no gum since most children (and many adults) do not know how to chew in such a way that it does not remind one of cows chewing their cud. This is not to mention the issues you mentioned AND we have carpeting. Ever try to get gum out of the carpeting? Then of course there is always the gum stuck in someone’s hair. We do not have a huge issue with it her with the exception of 8th graders trying to see what they cn get away with.
