“In our schools today, education is changing.  We have more technology than we know what to do with.  Our Lutheran schools have the opportunity now more than ever to utilize the same technologies as other schools do via the Internet.  There has been an explosion in online, collaborative networking in the last 5 years or so with the introduction of MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Plurk and other social networking sites.  What happens when we utilize these tools in our professional development?  Continuous online learning!  We now have tools that we, as Lutheran Educators, can use to collaborate with other educators continuously.  Whether you are seasoned at networking or are just beginning, sharing is valuable for all.”

THURSDAY 02/25/10 – 5:00-6:00pm
Podcast My Class Fast
Daniel Burk
Grace Lutheran Lancaster, CA

“Teachers are afraid to try something new.  Podcast is something that any class and any teacher can utilize in their classroom.  We will go step-by-step how easy it is to record and publish a Podcast for your class.”

FRIDAY 02/26/10 – 11:00-12:00 noon
Personal Learning Networks and You
Jeremy Biddle
CUW Ed Tech Cohort/Lutheran Educators’ Guild

Link to recording: https://corsica.cuw.edu/p73822927/

“Personal Learning Networks [PLNs] are a solution for one of 21st Century education’s most difficult problems: keeping informed of emerging technologies and learning how to utilize them in our classrooms.  PLNs tap into the vast array of freely available information via traditional sources (books, newspapers, etc.) and emerging ones (blogs, Twitter, etc.).  A PLN, states Dr. Daniel R. Tobin, is a group of people who can guide your learning, point you to learning opportunities, answer your questions, and give you the benefit of their own knowledge and experience. This presentation will provide a starting point for educators to implement their own PLNs.  The audience will be provided with a brief presentation on PLNs and their usefulness, suggestions of software to use (along with tutorials/demonstrations of their use), and a categorized list of sources for individual educators to use in beginning their own PLN.  The list of sources will be posted online, with the ability for an educator to make their own additions to share.”

We didn’t meet our goal of 100 friends and followers each on Facebook and Twitter, but we did reach 74 Facebook friends and 46 Twitter followers.  That’s just amazing!  Let’s see if we can add another 30 to each by the end of February, so 104 Facebook friends and 76 Twitter followers.

Also, we here at the Lutheran Educators’ Guild have begun talking about creating a Lutheran Education-focused podcast.  We’d like to know how many of you listen to podcasts on a regular basis as well as how many of you might be interested in listening to one focused on Lutheran education.  What would you like such a podcast to “look” like and what topics would you want to have discussed?  Please, let us know in comments, on the forum, or via email.

Update: Facebook and Twitter (1)

January 29th, 2010 by admin, under Announcements.

As we approach the end of the month, I’d like to thank all of our new friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter for helping us as we strive to reach our goal of 100 friends and followers on each of these social networks.  Currently, the Lutheran Educators’ Guild has 74 Facebook friends and 40 Twitter followers.  I believe we can still reach our goal with your help.  Please tell your friends and followers about the Guild and ask them to consider following us.

We need your help! (1)

January 20th, 2010 by admin, under Announcements.

A major reason for the existence of the Lutheran Educators’ Guild is “to create a community of fellowship and encouragement for Lutheran educators.” One way to do that is by spreading the word about the Guild to others. If you haven’t already, please take the time to become a fan of the Guild on Facebook (follow the link or use the Facebook Fan box on the right) and follow us on Twitter (@luthedguild). Please let your friends, followers, and PLNs know about us as well. Let’s see if we can reach 100 Facebook fans and 100 Twitter followers by the end of the month!

And while you’re here, please create a user account on the main Guild site so you can participate in our new forums.

Bugfixes and updates (1)

January 7th, 2010 by admin, under Announcements.

It came to my attention today that the commenting system was not functioning properly. The problem was traced to a malfunctioning plugin and resolved. Commenting should now be working again. If you experience any further difficulties with it, please email webmaster@lutheraneducators.com.

You may have also noticed a substantial change in the appearance of the site today. We received a suggestion from one of our members that the light grey on dark grey look was very difficult to read. We hope the new color format improves on that.

Thank you, again, for continuing to read our articles. We look forward to hearing more from our readers in our new forum system.

God bless!

Merry Christmas! (0)

December 24th, 2009 by admin, under Announcements.

On behalf of the staff of the Lutheran Educators’ Guild, I would like to wish all of our readers a most blessed Christmas.  For many of us, Christmas is a busy time as we travel, do last-minute shopping, get our homes ready to open to friends and family.  It is our prayer that all of us would find the time to reflect upon the True Reason for the season, as we remember how our Loving Father gave us His Perfect Gift on that first Christmas so many years ago.  And let us also remember that this Gift, the gift of salvation through Jesus, has been given to us that we might share it with the rest of the world.

Let us join our voices with the host of Heaven and sing: “Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!” (Luke 2:14, NIV)

WANTED: You! (0)

September 1st, 2009 by admin, under Announcements.

The Lutheran Educators’ Guild is looking for 3-5 educators who are Lutheran (intentional awkward use of English there) who are interested in writing for our blog.

The Guild was established “to develop and provide high quality educational resources, to create a community of fellowship and encouragement for Lutheran educators, and to engage the world in Christ-centered dialogue.”

Contributors to the site are asked to post 1-3 (or more, if you like) times to the site each week. Posts can cover any topic you wish, as long as it relates to education as a Lutheran. Presently, the site will be an online magazine of Lutheran education covering topics like technology integration, preparing for parent conferences, being a Christian teacher in a public school (if anyone knows a Lutheran public school teacher who might be interested, please let me know!), devotions, IEPs, recipes for the next school potluck, etc. We are also hoping to share helpful resources for your classroom and professional development.
